The Odyssey had traveled for years, exploring the unknown, meeting new species, discovering wonders. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, looking at the stars.

"Command, this is Vasquez. Our journey is complete."

"Copy, Odyssey. You've done remarkable work."

Kaelen appeared beside her. "You have seen the universe. You have brought peace to many worlds."

"We have done what the First Ones dreamed of," Elena said.

"Yes. You have become their legacy."

The Odyssey returned to the colony, where it was welcomed as a hero.

Elena walked through the domes, touching the gardens, the homes, the future.

"What's next?" Kaelen asked.

Elena smiled. "There's always more to explore."

The Odyssey launched again, carrying a new generation of explorers.

The universe was vast.

And full of possibilities.

The end.

The night jump was chaos. Tommy floated down through flak and fire, the island below him dark and dangerous. Around him, other parachutes bloomed like white flowers against the black sky. Some caught fire. Some fell faster than they should.

He hit the ground hard, rolled, came up with his Sten ready. The drop zone was supposed to be clear. It wasn't.

Shadows moved in the olive grove. German? Italian? He couldn't tell.

"Walker!" Miller's voice, close. "Over here!"

Tommy crawled toward the sound, found Miller and two others huddled behind a stone wall. Miller's face was grim.

"We're scattered. Half the company dropped miles off target. We're on our own until dawn."

A burst of machine gun fire ripped through the trees. Tommy pressed into the wall, heart hammering.

"Germans," someone whispered. "They knew we were coming."

They waited in the darkness, listening to the enemy move, trying to disappear into the Sicilian night. Tommy clutched his rifle and thought about the journal in his pack, about Friedrich's photograph, about everything he might never see again.

At dawn, the Germans pulled back. Tommy emerged from behind the wall, stiff, exhausted, alive.

Miller counted heads. Five men. From a company of a hundred.

"Let's find the rest," Miller said. "The invasion's just starting."

They moved inland, toward the sound of fighting.

Behind them, the drop zone was littered with the evidence of a night that had gone wrong.

Ahead, the road to Messina waited.

And somewhere in between, Tommy Walker kept moving.
